The Jacksonville community is in shock after an 18-year-old employee, Matthew Jackson, was tragically killed while attempting to intervene in a fight at a local Burger King. Investigators say Cummings and Burritt had been friends in the past, but a falling out had caused them to drift apart. On the night of the shooting, the two exchanged words inside the restaurant, leading to a heated argument. Witnesses stated that Matthew, who was working his shift at the restaurant, attempted to break up the fight in an effort to restore peace.
However, moments after Matthew intervened, shots rang out, and Matthew was struck. Burritt fled the scene, and police immediately began their investigation. Detectives quickly gathered evidence and spoke to witnesses, ultimately identifying Burritt as the suspect. He was arrested Sunday morning and now faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder, and armed burglary. Burritt’s next court date is scheduled for December 16.
