Stephen Geer, a 43-year-old mechanical engineering professor at the Colorado School of Mines, was arrested following a fatal DUI crash in Golden, Colorado, that killed Golden Police Officer Evan Dunn and injured another.

The incident occurred on Wednesday shortly before 5 p.m. along Colorado Highway 58 near Washington Avenue in snowy conditions. Geer’s vehicle allegedly struck another vehicle, propelling the officers under the initial crashed vehicle and trapping them beneath it. Officer Dunn, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene, while another officer suffered serious injuries.
Geer claimed to have consumed only one 16-ounce beer prior to the collision. Authorities are investigating Geer for vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. Jefferson County Court Judge Thomas Vance set Geer’s bond at $250,000 and scheduled a hearing for November 14.
Golden Police Chief Joe Harvey described Officer Dunn as “an incredible human being” with a distinguished military background, including a career as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot and commander. Officer Dunn is survived by his wife, Annalise, their dog, Remy, parents, and two siblings.
