Authorities have identified 91-year-old John Frueh Sr. as the victim of a tragic house fire in Alpine Township. Frueh was the sole occupant of his home on 4 Mile Road.
The fire broke out around 1 a.m. on September 9, and a passerby alerted authorities after spotting the flames. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the blaze had already spread extensively, preventing firefighters from safely entering the home. Frueh was later confirmed dead inside.

A preliminary autopsy confirmed that his death was directly related to the fire, with no signs of foul play. Investigators believe the fire began in the garage and rapidly consumed the rest of the residence. The cause and origin remain under investigation by the Plainfield Township Fire Investigator with assistance from the Michigan State Police.
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office offered condolences, stating: “We extend our sympathy to the family and friends grieving this loss.”
Friends and neighbors remember Frueh as a kindhearted, generous man who was always willing to help others. Longtime neighbor Marvin Andree recalled Frueh’s helpful nature, noting his willingness to assist with tasks like removing bees from his yard. Frueh was also a devoted member of Berlin Baptist Church, attending services just days before the fire.
Having lost his wife three years ago, Frueh relied on his church family for comfort and support. The congregation now prepares to honor his memory and celebrate a life defined by faith, generosity, and community spirit.
