Authorities have confirmed the tragic death of Jason Beckman, a 52-year-old North Tonawanda resident and beloved Amherst Central Schools coach, after his vehicle plunged into the Niagara River on Monday morning.
According to the New York State Police, Beckman was identified as the registered owner and driver of the Jeep recovered from the river near the Bird Overlook along the Niagara Scenic Parkway. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Beckman, a respected member of the Amherst Central Schools athletic department, served as both the varsity football coach and boys’ varsity bowling coach, earning admiration from students, staff, and the wider community for his leadership and mentorship.
In a statement, the Amherst Central School District expressed deep sorrow over his passing, calling him a “valued and dedicated member of our school family.” The district also announced that grief counseling and support services would be made available for students, staff, and families affected by the loss.
The incident unfolded around 9:15 a.m. Monday, when multiple witnesses reported seeing a vehicle veer off the Niagara Scenic Parkway and enter the water. Emergency responders from several agencies — including the New York State Park Police, Niagara Falls Police Department, and Niagara Falls Fire Department — launched a coordinated rescue effort by land, air, and water.
Divers later located the submerged vehicle roughly 50 feet offshore, and by early evening, authorities recovered Beckman’s body. Officials have since confirmed that no additional victims were involved.
Beckman’s remains were transported to the Erie County Medical Center, where an autopsy will determine the official cause of death. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and are asking anyone with information to contact New York State Park Police at (716) 278-1777.
