The Baton Rouge community is mourning the devastating loss of 17-year-old Micah Booker, who was fatally shot late Saturday night, October 4, 2025, at the Cadence at Southern University apartment complex. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the city, leaving family, friends, and students heartbroken.
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD), officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 10:20 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Micah suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have not confirmed whether Micah resided at the complex, located near Southern University on Scenic Highway, though it is known to house several students affiliated with the university. Lt. L’Jean McKneely noted that while the complex is not on campus, it remains closely tied to the student community.
The tragedy has deeply affected Southern University students, including Parker Frye, who lives at the complex.
“When I heard about this tragic, unfortunate event, it broke my heart that it happened right next to my school,” Frye said. “It kind of puts out a look that my school can be unsafe for newcomers. The last thing we want to do is push people away — we want to make this a good, safe community.”
Investigators are currently interviewing individuals believed to have been present during the shooting.
“Apparently, there was a group of folks there at that particular time when the incident happened,” Lt. McKneely explained. “We’re going to speak to all of those individuals and see what we can find.”
In the wake of this tragedy, Frye offered a message of hope:
“Hopefully, moving forward, we can learn from our actions and work harder to protect our community.”
