The Stevens Point community is mourning the untimely passing of Matthias Paul Rudnick, a talented filmmaker and cinematographer, who died unexpectedly on August 21, 2025, at the age of 22. Known for his creativity, kindness, and infectious joy, Matthias left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Born on January 7, 2003, in Stevens Point, Matthias grew up in Plover as the cherished son of Paul and Jennifer Rudnick. From a young age, he displayed a passion for learning, creativity, and adventure. He attended St. Paul Lutheran and Roosevelt Elementary Schools before continuing his education at Ben Franklin Jr. High and Stevens Point Area High School (SPASH).
At SPASH, Matthias was an all-around student, excelling in academics, athletics, music, and theater. He played football, competed in track and field, and was actively involved in choir, jazz band, and school productions. Notably, he earned a leading role in the school musical Mamma Mia and achieved a black belt in martial arts, reflecting his discipline and determination.
Faith was central to Matthias’s life. He was actively involved in St. Paul Lutheran Church and youth groups, where he performed in the praise band and helped usher services, using his talents to inspire and uplift others.
After high school, Matthias pursued his passion for film at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, graduating with honors in May 2025. He was celebrated for his storytelling ability and cinematography skills, often helping others bring their creative visions to life. His adventures took him abroad to London, broadening his perspective and fueling his love for exploring new cultures.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Matthias loved music, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. He also served his community through initiatives such as the 911 Memorial Restoration Group and as a board member of Skyward, Inc. Known for his warm hugs and bright smile, Matthias brought light and joy wherever he went.
He is survived by his parents, Paul and Jennifer Rudnick; sister, Katie Ferguson; brother, Nathaniel Rudnick; maternal grandparents Jim and Jean King; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Martin and Bernice Rudnick.
Funeral services for Matthias will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1919 Wyatt Avenue, Stevens Point, with visitation the day prior and on the day of the service. Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.
The family invites friends and loved ones to a Celebration of Life at Oso’s Brewery in Plover from 3:00–9:00 PM, honoring Matthias’s adventurous spirit, creativity, and the love he shared with all who knew him.
