Bethesda, MD – The Bethesda community and the broader education world are grieving the loss of Susanna Jones, the longtime Head of School at Holton-Arms, who passed away unexpectedly.

Jones dedicated more than 16 years to leading Holton-Arms, a respected day school for girls in grades 3–12. Her tenure was defined by visionary leadership, innovation, and a commitment to empowering young women to excel academically and globally.
During her time at the school, she launched the Global Education Program, created the Global Scholars designation for seniors, and championed Learn Well, Live Well, Lead Well (LW3)—a philosophy that shaped the school’s culture. She also oversaw the creation of the Holton-Arms Center for the Advancement of STEM, expanding opportunities for girls in science and technology.
Jones’ influence reached beyond Holton-Arms. She played a key role in the founding of the Online School for Girls (now One Schoolhouse), strengthening virtual learning opportunities nationwide. Earlier in her career, she served as Head of The Ethel Walker School in Connecticut, Upper School Director at Marlborough School in Los Angeles, and taught at prestigious institutions including the Spence School, Columbia University, and Baruch College.
A Princeton and Columbia graduate, Jones was widely respected for her scholarship, leadership, and dedication to the advancement of girls’ education. She also contributed to development work at several organizations and co-authored The Complete Guide to Capital Campaigns for Historic Churches and Synagogues.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, she was cherished for her warmth and personal passions—spending time with her husband and their Scottish terrier, Percy, at their homes in Maryland and Maine. She enjoyed knitting, reading, and exploring issues centered on women’s empowerment.
Susanna Jones leaves behind a profound legacy of leadership, compassion, and mentorship. She will be remembered as a transformative figure in education and an inspiration to students, colleagues, and communities nationwide.
