The Birmingham community is mourning the death of Aldorthia Burrell, 82, who was tragically struck by a stray bullet Wednesday evening in the 3200 block of Balsam Ave SW.
The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m., when officers responding to a reported shooting discovered Burrell lying on her porch. She was transported to UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities confirmed that Burrell was not the intended target, as the shooting stemmed from an earlier altercation on 33rd Street SW.
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett condemned the attack, emphasizing the unacceptable nature of the crime. “She was an elderly woman sitting on her porch at the time. We’re literally not gonna let up until that person is in custody. The city is gonna feel that until we get that person in custody,” he said.
No suspects have been apprehended at this time. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Birmingham Police detectives at 205-254-1764 or CrimeStoppers at 205-254-7777.
The community continues to grapple with the shock of this senseless act, as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.
