Toledo Bend Reservoir, TX–LA – The search for 22-year-old Peyton Hughes, a Campbellsville University student and member of the school’s kayak fishing team, ended in tragedy on Friday morning, September 26, 2025, when authorities recovered his body from the lake.

Hughes, originally from Kentucky, had been reported missing on September 24 after failing to meet his travel partner during a pre-tournament fishing outing. Officers with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) later discovered his kayak, but no sign of the young angler.
His mother, Sara Ashley Hughes, shared the heartbreaking update, writing: “Oh NOOO my baby is gone. They recovered his body this morning in the lake… My sweet boy is gone to be with his Daddy who died fighting for this country. I love you Peyton Hughes & Adam! Oh gosh I’m hurting so bad!”
Hughes had been preparing to compete in the Bassmaster Kayak Series tournament scheduled for September 27–28. The search involved TPWD and local crews, who used boats and specialized equipment to comb the reservoir.
The wider kayak fishing community and B.A.S.S. (Bass Anglers Sportsman Society) expressed condolences, remembering Hughes as a passionate competitor and devoted son whose life was cut tragically short.
The Campbellsville University community is mourning the loss of one of its young athletes, as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
