BRISTOL, Conn. — A 31-year-old city resident died Wednesday night after the vehicle he was driving slammed into a utility pole on Broad Street, police confirmed Thursday.
Jonathan Edward Whittle was found unresponsive inside the heavily damaged car near the intersection with Todd Street shortly after the 10:40 p.m. crash. Bristol officers and firefighters worked quickly to extricate him and began emergency treatment at the scene.

Whittle was rushed to Bristol Health, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators say the vehicle was traveling south on Broad Street when it left the roadway and struck the pole. No other vehicles were involved.
“Speed and road conditions are among the factors being examined,” a Bristol Police spokesperson said. “The investigation is active and ongoing.”
The crash knocked down power lines and caused a temporary road closure while Eversource crews made repairs.

Friends have begun leaving flowers and candles at the crash site, and a growing online tribute remembers Whittle as a kind and hardworking man who was always quick with a smile.
The family has asked for privacy as they grieve. Funeral arrangements are pending.
