A Buffalo man has been indicted on murder charges after a woman and her newborn baby were found dead following a house fire on Norwood Avenue earlier this month.
According to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office, 30-year-old Kidane Haile has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of 29-year-old Kathleen Carrig and her four-day-old son, Noah.

Firefighters were called to a home in the 400 block of Norwood Avenue around 8:30 a.m. on the day of the incident. Upon arrival, crews found the residence engulfed in flames. Both victims were discovered inside and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe Haile allegedly strangled Kathleen Carrig before setting the fire using gasoline. The exact cause of death for the infant is still under investigation.
Haile was taken to Erie County Medical Center with injuries sustained during the fire. He has since been arraigned and pleaded not guilty to the charges. He remains in custody without bail.
Prosecutors said the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges could be filed as more evidence is reviewed.
The tragic case has shaken the Buffalo community, with residents mourning the loss of the young mother and her newborn.
