CANFIELD, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Canfield community are grieving the tragic loss of Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton, who was killed in the line of duty while assisting a disabled commercial vehicle on State Route 11, south of U.S. 224.
Trooper Cayton was struck by a semi-truck during the incident and, despite the immediate response of fellow officers and first responders, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passing has left a profound void within the Patrol and among all who knew him.

“Today, the Patrol lost a member of our family. This is a tragedy for the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Department of Public Safety,” said Colonel Charles A. Jones, Superintendent of the Patrol. “Our prayers go out to the Cayton family during this difficult time.”
