Castle Hayne, N.C. — A North Carolina community is reeling after a family tragedy left two people dead and another behind bars.
On Sunday, September 6, deputies responded to a call around 1 p.m. at a home on Davis Lane in Castle Hayne. Inside, they discovered 72-year-old Rebia Hobbs and her son, Eric Hobbs, dead from gunshot wounds.

Authorities say the victims’ grandson and nephew, 35-year-old Shan Shawon Hobbs, pulled the trigger inside the very home they all shared.
Family members told reporters that Shan had been struggling with severe mental health issues. What began as concern for his wellbeing has now turned into unbearable grief for relatives left to mourn two lives cut short.
Deputies arrested Hobbs at the scene and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder. Court records show he was denied bond after his arrest and made his first court appearance on Monday, September 8.
Neighbors described the Hobbs family as close-knit and caring, making the tragedy even harder to comprehend. Castle Hayne, a small community just north of Wilmington, is now struggling to process the violent betrayal within a household once bound by love and trust.
