Catawba County Schools Mourn the Loss of Educator and Board Member Dr. Leslie Barnette

Catawba County, NC — The Catawba County Schools community is mourning the passing of Dr. Leslie Barnette, a lifelong educator, mentor, and member of the Board of Education whose dedication and service left a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues.

Born and raised in Catawba County, Dr. Barnette was a proud graduate of St. Stephens High School. Over her 42-year career in education, she rose through the ranks from teacher assistant to classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and eventually Director of Elementary Education, Federal Programs, Preschool, and Early Headstart. Her leadership and compassion shaped countless students and educators throughout the county.

In 2016, Dr. Barnette earned her doctorate in education from Appalachian State University, demonstrating her commitment to lifelong learning and setting an example for those she mentored.

Catawba County Schools released a statement honoring her legacy:
“She touched countless lives and will be remembered most for the way she cared for people, pouring love into her students, colleagues, and community. Her impact on students, staff, and our community is immeasurable, and she remains one of the reasons Catawba County Schools is the Diamond Standard.”

Dr. Barnette’s passing leaves a profound void in the community, but her spirit, dedication, and kindness continue to inspire those who knew her. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
