The Center Junction, Iowa community is grieving the unexpected passing of Matthew “Matt” John Lorenzen, who died suddenly on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the age of 48. A devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and respected community member, Matt’s passing has left a profound void in the lives of those who knew him.
Born on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at Anamosa Hospital, Matt grew up in Center Junction and remained deeply connected to his hometown throughout his life. A Midland Community High School graduate of 1995, he went on to study at the University of Northern Iowa, where he built the foundation for his lifelong career in agriculture and service.

On January 28, 2000, Matt married Robin Tarbox at the Center Junction Presbyterian Church. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising three children—Jacob (Andrea), Ian, and Jordan—and celebrating the arrival of their cherished grandson, Henry.
Matt’s professional life reflected his unwavering work ethic and loyalty. He worked with CPS in Wyoming before dedicating two decades to Cedar Rapids Winpump. Eventually, his passion for the land drew him back home to farm full-time and manage MJ Lorenzen Trucking, where he found joy in both hard work and independence.
Beyond his career, Matt was a driving force in youth leadership through his lifelong involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. As Scout Master for Troop 66, and through his roles in the Order of the Arrow, Camping Committee, and as Lodge Advisor at Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation, Matt inspired countless young people with his integrity, dedication, and kindness. His presence at camp was constant and cherished.
A man of many talents, Matt also earned a First-Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, demonstrating the same focus and determination that defined every part of his life.
Matt is survived by his wife Robin, children Jacob (Andrea), Ian, and Jordan, grandson Henry, mother Carol (Charles Fairbanks) Lorenzen, siblings Angie (Joe) Christensen and Nick Lorenzen, as well as his beloved dog and co-pilot Marshall. He is also lovingly remembered by his extended family and in-laws, including Dan (Karen) Tarbox, Kathy (Dennis) Valenta, Becky (Pat) Keating, and Jenny (Zach) Borst, along with nieces and nephews Brookelyn, Nathan, Colton, and Chloe. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Lorenzen.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Goettsch Funeral Home in Monticello. Funeral services will take place the following day, Monday, October 27, 2025, at 10:57 a.m., at Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation in rural Central City, with Pastor Holly Knouse officiating. Interment will follow at North Maddison Pioneer Cemetery in Center Junction.
Matt Lorenzen’s life was one of commitment, service, and deep love—to his family, his community, and the young lives he helped shape. His legacy of integrity and compassion will continue to guide and inspire all who had the honor of knowing him.
