Champaign, IL — Authorities are investigating the death of 45-year-old Michael L. Huffman, who was found with a gunshot wound Wednesday morning near Spalding Park in Champaign.

Champaign police were dispatched at 6:12 a.m. to the area near Maple and Prairie streets following a report of a deceased individual. Upon arrival, officers discovered Huffman’s body near the railroad tracks. Coroner Laurie Brauer confirmed his identity, noting that he had likely been deceased for several hours before being found.

Police have secured the scene and are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding Huffman’s death. Officials said there were no 911 calls regarding gunfire overnight, and the timing of the incident is still being verified.

Investigators are canvassing the surrounding area for witnesses and any video footage that could aid the case. Residents and businesses with exterior surveillance cameras are urged to contact the Champaign Police Department.
