The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of its own after Corrections Lieutenant William Garlick died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
The fatal collision occurred Friday evening on North Cleveland Avenue near Delft Avenue in North Port. Authorities say Lt.

Garlick, 49, was riding his motorcycle southbound while heading home from work when a white SUV traveling in the opposite direction turned left directly into his path. Garlick was rushed to an area hospital with critical injuries but succumbed to those injuries a short time later. The driver of the SUV was uninjured.
Sheriff Bill Prummell released a statement calling Garlick “a father, husband, friend, and brother” to the entire agency.
“William Garlick was more than a Corrections Lieutenant for CCSO; he was the quiet backbone of his shifts,” Sheriff Prummell said. “He leaves behind an unmatched legacy of dedication, mentorship, and integrity. My heart hurts for his family and loved ones, as well as for our members who will miss his quiet leadership on shift. May he rest in God’s eternal glory and never be forgotten.”
Lt. Garlick had served with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office for nearly two decades and was widely respected for his calm demeanor and commitment to both his colleagues and the community.
A public Celebration of Life will be held in his honor at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Babcock Field House, located at 43281 Cypress Parkway in Babcock Ranch. The service is open to the public.
In lieu of flowers, the Garlick family has requested donations be made to the CCSO “Shop With A Cop” program, an initiative close to Lt. Garlick’s heart. Checks may be made payable to CCSO with “Shop With A Cop” in the memo line and mailed to:

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. No charges have been announced at this time.
