HARRISBURG/MINT HILL – The hallways of Hickory Ridge Middle and High schools feel quieter this week as news spreads of the passing of Jarren Michael Felder, a Charlotte native whose easy smile and familiar presence once filled those corridors.
Known to everyone simply as Michael, he grew up in the Harrisburg area and proudly carried the red-and-black Raptor spirit wherever he went.

Teachers remember a thoughtful student who always made time to check in on friends and classmates; students from his era remember the kid who could light up the cafeteria with a joke or calm a tense moment with a quiet word.
After graduating from Hickory Ridge High, Michael remained a recognizable face around the community, often spotted back on campus visiting former teachers or catching Friday-night football games under the lights he once cheered beneath himself.
While details surrounding his passing remain private at the family’s request, the outpouring of grief across social media has been immediate and heartfelt. Former classmates have flooded group chats and alumni pages with photos—Michael in his cap and gown, Michael on the sidelines, Michael simply being Michael.
Hickory Ridge High School issued a brief statement Wednesday:
“Our Raptor family is heartbroken to learn of Michael Felder’s passing. He will always be part of the Hickory Ridge story. Once a Raptor, always a Raptor.”
