Chicago Man Stabbed During Late-Night Dispute in East Chicago; Woman in Custody

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. — A domestic conflict turned deadly early Tuesday morning after a 25-year-old man from Chicago, John Champion Jr., was fatally stabbed at an East Chicago apartment.

Shortly before 2:40 a.m. on October 7, police officers were summoned to 3504 Pennsylvania Avenue, Apartment 89. Inside, they found Champion suffering from a stab wound to his lower abdomen. He was rushed to St. Catherine Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

At the scene, 22-year-old Jatavia Miller, a resident of East Chicago, was detained after confessing that she had stabbed Champion amid what authorities described as a domestic altercation.

The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force and Lake County Crime Scene Investigators (C.S.I.) have joined the East Chicago Police Department in a joint investigation. Authorities say they aim to clarify the events leading up to the stabbing and whether additional charges might follow.

Investigators are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident, or have relevant information, to step forward. The East Chicago Police Department extended its deepest condolences to Champion’s family and friends as they grapple with this tragic loss.
