Authorities have released the identity of the young woman who died in a devastating single-vehicle crash early Sunday on the Borman Expressway in Gary, Indiana.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Faith Vandell Mitchell of Chicago, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Investigators said the crash happened at approximately 1:56 a.m. on September 21, 2025, near the Cline Avenue exit.
Preliminary reports indicate Mitchell’s vehicle veered off Interstate 80/94, struck a bridge support column, and erupted in flames. First responders arrived to find the car heavily damaged and on fire. Despite efforts at the scene, Mitchell succumbed to multiple blunt-force and burn injuries.
Family members, heartbroken by the sudden loss, were able to identify Mitchell through distinctive tattoos, though officials noted DNA or dental records will be used for final confirmation. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
