CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg Rescue Squad is grieving the death of veteran member Jerry Federer, a steadfast first responder whose calm presence and years of service became a cornerstone of the department and the community it protects.
Federer served with the squad for decades, answering calls at all hours and standing ready on scenes ranging from highway wrecks to medical emergencies. Colleagues say his steady demeanor often made the difference in tense moments, providing reassurance to both patients and fellow responders.

“Jerry was the person you wanted beside you when everything was going wrong,” one squad member said. “He never panicked, never complained, and always put the patient first.”
Beyond his technical skill, Federer was known for mentoring newer members, offering quiet guidance and leading by example. Many current responders credit him with shaping the way they approach the job.
The squad released a brief statement Monday confirming his passing and asking the public to keep Federer’s family in their thoughts. While no details about services have been announced, members say they plan to honor him in the way he would have preferred: by continuing to respond promptly and professionally to every call.
“Jerry wouldn’t want us standing still,” the statement read. “The best way we can remember him is by doing the work he loved and doing it well.”
