The Clay County community is in mourning following a devastating crash early Sunday morning, November 9, that claimed the lives of two teenagers. The Mississippi Highway Patrol reports that the collision occurred shortly after 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 45 South Alternate and East Tibbee Road.
Investigators state that a 2016 Nissan Altima was attempting to turn onto Highway 45 North when it was struck by a 2024 Mazda SUV traveling northbound. The impact was severe, and two young passengers in the Altima were tragically killed at the scene.

The victims have been identified as 18-year-old Nia Gates of Nettleton and 19-year-old Christopher Standifer of Prairie. Both teens are being remembered by family and friends as vibrant, loving individuals full of promise and potential.
Nia’s mother, Valerie Clay, shared her overwhelming grief in a heartfelt statement: “I just hit the floor — this is my baby, and this is my first time going through something like this. I don’t want any mother to have to feel this pain. It’s a hard pill to swallow.” Nia, a senior at Nettleton High School, was known for her kindness, joy, and infectious smile. Her aunt, Tammy Clay, expressed the community’s deep sorrow, saying, “Everyone in the community loves and respects Nia. We miss her dearly, but she will always be in our hearts — and in all of this, Jesus wins.”
A balloon release was held at Nettleton High School in honor of Nia, where friends and family gathered to remember her vibrant spirit and the positive impact she had on everyone around her. The Clay family is asking for continued prayers as they seek justice for Nia’s tragic death, with Valerie Clay expressing, “I want justice, and I’m not going to stop until I get it.”
Christopher Standifer, the second victim, is also being remembered for his big heart and caring nature. His loved ones are devastated by his untimely passing and are also asking for prayers and support during this difficult time.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash, as the Clay County community grapples with the loss of two young lives that were just beginning to unfold.
