Family, friends, and the wider community are mourning the loss of Adaija Symone Bender, a young woman whose determination, authenticity, and bright spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Born December 5, 2002, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Adaija’s journey came to a close far too soon on August 18, 2025, at the age of 22.

From an early age, Adaija displayed a deep passion for basketball, a sport that would become a defining part of her life. She began her high school career at Harrisonburg High School before transferring to Woodbridge High School, where her leadership and relentless drive became instrumental to the team’s success. In 2019, she helped guide Woodbridge to victory in the VHSL State Championship, a highlight that underscored her skill, discipline, and quiet yet powerful influence on the court. Her talent and dedication eventually earned her a place as a Division I athlete, a testament to years of hard work and perseverance.
While her athletic accomplishments were remarkable, Adaija’s impact extended far beyond the basketball court. She was remembered as a free spirit — authentic, loyal, and fiercely independent. Those closest to her described her as witty, intelligent, and deeply generous, with the ability to both inspire and challenge those around her. She stood firm in her beliefs, spoke her truth with confidence, and carried a warmth and humor that brightened the lives of family and friends alike.
To her loved ones, Adaija was not only a gifted athlete but also a devoted mother, daughter, sister, and niece. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Oakland Rai, who was her greatest joy and motivation; her mother, Angela Williams, and husband, Rhasheyd Williams of Woodbridge, VA; her father, Richard Madden of Harrisonburg, VA; her sisters, Trinity Bender, Haile Madden, Shanta Bender, Haiden Madden, and Kaliana Madden; her uncles, Nevin Bender, Conrad Bender (Beth Formica Bender), and Jason Madden; her aunt, Marcia Bender (Scott Hepler); and her grandmother, Lourene Bender. Each will carry forward a part of her spirit and the love she shared.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Christian School in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where family, friends, and the community will gather to honor her memory, reflect on her accomplishments, and celebrate the joy she brought to those around her.
In recognition of Adaija’s devotion to her daughter, a GoFundMe has been established to support Oakland’s education fund. Contributions to the fundraiser provide an opportunity for family, friends, and community members to continue Adaija’s legacy by helping secure the future of the child she cherished most.
Though her life ended too soon, Adaija’s influence continues to shine through the lives she touched. She will be remembered as a talented athlete, a loving mother, and a remarkable young woman who lived authentically, inspired others with her determination, and left behind a legacy of love and strength.
Her spark will endure in the hearts of all who knew her.
