The communities of Cedarburg, Fox Point, Milwaukee, and Ozaukee County are grieving the heartbreaking loss of Grant M. Freeze, a Nicolet High School student, accomplished swimmer, and active member of the area’s youth hockey programs. Freeze tragically died following a severe car crash in Mequon on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

The Crash
According to the Mequon Police Department, the collision occurred shortly after 3:45 p.m. on West Pioneer Road near North Klug Lane. Authorities reported that a westbound SUV, driven by 16-year-old Freeze, crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound dump truck operated by a 57-year-old man.
Emergency responders from the Southern Ozaukee Fire Department quickly arrived on scene. Freeze was extricated from the wreckage and airlifted by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital with critical injuries. Despite intensive medical efforts, he was pronounced dead later that night.
The driver of the dump truck also sustained serious injuries and was transported to Froedtert Hospital but is expected to survive.
West Pioneer Road was closed for nearly four hours as the Ozaukee County Crash Reconstruction Team investigated the accident. Cleanup efforts were assisted by the county’s Highway Department and Emergency Management teams.

Grant Freeze was more than just a student-athlete. He was celebrated for his dedication in the swimming pool, leadership among teammates, and his positive influence across both hockey and school communities. Friends, coaches, and classmates have described him as a driven competitor with a warm, encouraging spirit that uplifted those around him.
Tributes have poured in across the region, reflecting the deep impact Freeze had on his peers and the youth sports community. His sudden passing has left a lasting void in the lives of those who trained with him, competed alongside him, and shared in his journey.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities confirmed that the crash remains under active investigation.
Meanwhile, the Ozaukee youth hockey and swimming communities, along with the wider school district, are rallying together to support the Freeze family and honor the memory of a young man remembered for his determination, kindness, and love for sport.
