UTAH — Patients, families, and colleagues across Utah are mourning the loss of Dr. Michael “MJ” Johnson, a much-loved pediatrician whose warmth, wit, and devotion to children made him an unforgettable part of the community. Dr. Johnson passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and laughter that stretched far beyond the walls of his office.

Known for his quick humor and gentle bedside manner, Dr. Johnson had an extraordinary gift for putting young patients at ease. A visit with him wasn’t just about checkups or vaccinations — it was a moment of connection and reassurance. Parents often spoke of his ability to turn anxiety into calm, making every child feel safe, valued, and seen.
Among the stories shared by colleagues, one favorite highlights his playful spirit: On the day of a BYU–Utah football rivalry, Dr. Johnson — an enthusiastic Utes supporter — once held up two syringes for a teenage patient wearing BYU gear: a tiny one with “red” liquid and an oversized one with “blue.” The laughter that followed became a cherished memory, reflecting how he used humor to build trust and brighten nervous moments.
Beyond his jokes, Dr. Johnson was steadfast in his dedication to children’s health and family support. Whether celebrating milestones, easing a worried parent’s mind, or offering encouragement, he approached his work with empathy and sincerity. His colleagues at Families First Pediatrics remember him not only as a skilled physician but also as a mentor, teammate, and friend who lifted spirits wherever he went.
