CONCORD, N.C. — The Cornelius Police Department and surrounding community are mourning the loss of Officer Gabriel Stainback, who was killed Saturday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bike with his wife in Concord.

Authorities said Stainback, who joined the Cornelius Police Department in December 2024 after completing Basic Law Enforcement Training, died at the scene of the crash. He had first served as a cadet before earning his badge as a sworn officer.

Officials confirmed that Stainback was recently married, adding to the heartbreak felt by his loved ones, colleagues, and friends.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the Cornelius Police Department wrote:

“Our deepest condolences are with his family and our entire CPD family. Please keep them in your thoughts during this unimaginable tragedy.”

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the collision. As of Sunday, no additional details about the driver or the circumstances of the crash had been released.

The death of Officer Stainback has sent waves of grief through both the law enforcement community and the town of Cornelius, where he was remembered as a dedicated public servant whose life was tragically cut short.
