A heartbreaking accident in Cherokee County, Georgia, claimed the life of 51-year-old Carlos Moreno of Alpharetta on Sunday evening, after a suspected drunk driver struck him head-on while he was riding his bicycle along Sugar Pike Road near Canton.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 5:50 p.m. when a Rivian pickup truck traveling westbound veered across both lanes of traffic and collided directly with Moreno, who was riding in the opposite direction. Despite rapid response from emergency personnel, Moreno succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Authorities arrested the 42-year-old driver from Canton, who now faces multiple serious charges, including vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving, tampering with evidence, open container violation, and driving too fast for conditions. The suspect is being held without bond at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center as the investigation continues.

Investigators with the Traffic Enforcement Unit believe alcohol impairment and excessive speed were major factors contributing to the deadly collision.

“This accident was entirely preventable,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. “Impaired drivers pose a grave risk to everyone on the road and can shatter families in an instant.”

The tragic incident has reignited concerns about impaired driving across Georgia. According to data from the National Safety Council, roughly one in ten fatal crashes in the U.S. involves a driver under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications — making DUI-related accidents one of the nation’s leading causes of roadway deaths.

Legal experts say the family of Carlos Moreno may have grounds to pursue a civil wrongful death claim, which could help recover damages for emotional pain, loss of companionship, and other hardships resulting from the tragedy.

“The grief and devastation that follow an event like this are indescribable,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal. “It’s essential for families to know their rights and ensure accountability.”

Authorities continue urging motorists to drive sober and responsibly, reminding the public that one reckless decision can destroy multiple lives in an instant.
