The Danville, Illinois, community is grieving the sudden loss of Gary Gritton, a former teacher, coach, and athletic director at Danville High School (DHS), whose unexpected passing has left students, colleagues, and friends in shock.

Born and raised in Danville, Gary graduated from Oakwood High School and went on to dedicate his life to education, athletics, and service to the community he called home. For 24 years, he served at DHS, where he became a cornerstone of the school both inside and outside the classroom.
As a teacher, Gary was celebrated for his humor, patience, and passion, creating a classroom environment filled with encouragement and joy. Former students remember him as an inspirational figure whose impact extended far beyond academics.
His leadership carried over into athletics, first as a coach and later as Athletic Director, where he guided the Viking athletic program with fairness, vision, and integrity. The Viking Athletic family paid tribute, saying:
“During his 24 years at DHS, Gary touched the lives of all that he encountered in the classroom, on the diamond, and as Athletic Director. Please keep his family, friends, wife and three kids in your thoughts during this difficult time. He will be deeply missed by all.”
Community tributes describe him as a kind, approachable, and genuine man whose laughter filled hallways and locker rooms, leaving lasting memories for generations of students.
Gary is survived by his wife and three children, who were the center of his world. While his passing leaves a deep void, his legacy of dedication, kindness, and mentorship continues to inspire all who knew him.
