Darion McMillian, 23, has been formally charged by the Chicago Police Department for the tragic shooting of Officer Enrique Martinez on the city’s South Side. McMillian faces multiple charges, including:

The incident occurred on Monday evening in the East Chatham neighborhood, where Officer Martinez, 26, and his partner approached a vehicle blocking traffic. McMillian allegedly retrieved a fully automatic firearm and opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Martinez and killing the driver, whose identity remains undisclosed.

McMillian’s attempt to escape led to further chaos, including dragging an officer and forcing entry into a nearby apartment. He was eventually apprehended in the 8000 block of South Maryland.

McMillian’s criminal history includes prior offenses, such as unlawful cannabis possession and intent to distribute in January 2023, and tampering with a drug screening test in October.

CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling emphasized the importance of keeping violent offenders off the streets, stating, “We have to do everything that we can… If we don’t do that, then we’re failing our citizens, our children, and their futures.”
