Jody, discovered by his brother on his knees with a rope around his neck, was rushed to hospital but was declared deceased. The circumstances surrounding his death are now under investigation by Delft police, with an inquest docket officially opened.
Jody’s tragic passing has shaken the entire Delft community, already grappling with challenges of trauma, violence, and poverty. Local leaders, teachers, and residents are struggling to comprehend the loss of a child who should have been enjoying the innocence of youth. Ward Councillor Michelle Adonis expressed the community’s collective sorrow, calling it “an absolute tragedy that has shaken our community.”

Jody’s mother, Judith Windvogel, recounted the painful moment she found her son with a rope around his neck. Though this was not Jody’s first attempt, the family had previously revived him, and his mother is left heartbroken, searching for answers. She revealed that Jody had never spoken of being bullied, leaving the family in deep confusion and sorrow. His grandmother, Petro Windvogel, also called for an end to harmful rumors circulating on social media, specifically a false claim that Judith had been out buying alcohol when the tragedy occurred.
In response to the tragedy, Councillor Adonis visited Delft North Primary School, where Jody was a student, to offer support. The Western Cape Education Department, alongside partner NGOs like Masithembela, has dispatched social workers and trauma counselors to assist students, staff, and teachers coping with the devastating loss. Adonis also visited the Windvogel family to offer condolences and support, including assistance with funeral arrangements if needed.

Councillor Adonis is calling for expanded mental health programs in schools, stronger anti-bullying measures, and long-term community support to address the emotional wellbeing of children.
