The Delta State University community is reeling after the tragic death of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old student from Grenada, Mississippi, whose body was discovered on campus early Monday morning.
According to University Police Chief Mike Peeler, Reed was found around 7 a.m. on September 15, 2025, hanging from a tree near the university’s pickleball courts. Campus police and local authorities responded immediately to the scene.

Preliminary findings suggest no foul play was involved, Peeler said. Reed’s remains have been released to the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy will confirm the official cause of death. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is working alongside local law enforcement to ensure a thorough review.

Following the discovery, university officials temporarily closed the campus, pausing classes and events to give students and staff time to process the loss. Peeler emphasized there was no lockdown and no ongoing safety threat.
“I just want to confirm, this is a safe campus. Delta State University is a beautiful place to be. It’s just unfortunate this loss that comes heavily to our campus,” Peeler said during a press briefing.
