EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. — A close-knit community is mourning after a tragic car accident claimed the life of Gary Nicoll, who succumbed to catastrophic brain injury following a collision on October 2.
Nicoll was hospitalized at Albany Medical Center, fighting for days against multiple fractures, internal trauma, and what doctors classified as a Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) — a devastating form of head trauma. Despite intensive care and the support of his wife, Amanda, and their six-month-old daughter, Lucy, his injuries proved unsurvivable.

The loss has deeply affected both the East Greenbush and Troy communities. Friends and neighbors have rallied around Nicoll’s family, especially Amanda—herself a speech-language pathologist who often works with brain injury patients, making her current circumstances particularly heartbreaking. A GoFundMe initiative has been launched to help cover mounting medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and the financial impact of the loss.
Nicoll was remembered by those close to him as generous, caring, and dependable — someone who prioritized family and friendship above all else. He was originally from Troy, attended Tamarac Senior High School, and later built a successful career at Ayco in New York City. In his home life, his greatest joy reportedly came from quiet moments with his daughter and wife.
Though Nicoll is gone, family, friends, and community members say his legacy of kindness and empathy will continue to live on. Authorities have not publicly shared additional details about the circumstances of the crash.
