According to authorities, the accident occurred in Nordegg, Clearwater County, while Dr. Markland was mountain biking, a sport he deeply enjoyed. Despite emergency response efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Dr. Markland was widely admired for his work at both the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the University of Alberta Hospital, where he dedicated his career to patient care, mentorship, and health advocacy. His impact extended beyond the hospital walls, as he became a leading voice for health equity and community well-being.
A graduate of the University of Alberta, he pursued his medical degree at the University of Calgary and went on to complete specialized training before returning to serve the Edmonton community. His early education began at Memorial Composite High School in Stony Plain, Alberta, where he first charted his path toward medicine.
