Effingham County Mourns Loss of Jacob Lane After Fatal Crash on Blue Jay Road

The Effingham County community is grieving the loss of 34-year-old Jacob Lane, who tragically died in a single-vehicle crash on Friday night, October 24, 2025.

According to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the crash site shortly before 9 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious accident on Blue Jay Road near Finch Lane. Investigators determined that Lane was driving westbound when his vehicle veered off the roadway, crossed over Finch Lane, and struck a utility pole.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY - GOD BLESS YOU

Emergency crews arrived within minutes but were unable to save Lane, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

In a poignant detail that touched both investigators and the community, deputies discovered that Lane’s dog, Roxy, had been inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. A Good Samaritan who came across the scene found Roxy and cared for her until she was safely reunited with Lane’s family. The Sheriff’s Office praised the act of kindness, calling it “a bright light in the midst of tragedy.”

Authorities have not yet determined what caused Lane to lose control of his vehicle. The Traffic Enforcement Unit is examining possible contributing factors such as road conditions, mechanical failure, or a medical emergency. The roadway was closed for several hours Friday night while crews cleared debris and restored power to homes affected by the damaged utility pole.

In a public statement, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office extended heartfelt condolences to Lane’s loved ones, describing the crash as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly life can change. Deputies urged drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions, and exercise caution on rural roads, particularly after dark.

As the investigation continues, the Effingham County community remembers Jacob Lane as a kind and hardworking individual whose life ended too soon — and takes solace in knowing his loyal companion, Roxy, made it home safely.
