Authorities in Columbus have identified the victim of a tragic accidental shooting that occurred early Monday morning in the Lakebottom neighborhood. The victim has been confirmed as 31-year-old Erica Blascom Anderson, a beloved lecturer at Columbus State University’s Department of Theatre & Dance.
According to the Columbus Police Department, officers responded to a residence in the 1600 block of 17th Avenue around 1:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Anderson suffering from a gunshot wound. Investigators say the incident occurred when Anderson’s roommate, believing she was an intruder, accidentally fired the fatal shot.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed that Anderson, originally from Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene. The preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was accidental, taking place after Anderson returned home unexpectedly late at night.
Colleagues and students at Columbus State University are mourning her loss, remembering Anderson for her creativity, warmth, and dedication to her craft. “She brought passion and light to everything she did — both in her teaching and in the community,” the university said in a statement.
Anderson’s body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for an autopsy as authorities continue to review the details of the incident. The Violent Crimes Unit of the Columbus Police Department remains in charge of the investigation.
