EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A 17-year-old boy was gunned down early Wednesday morning in what police are calling a targeted act of violence, marking the city’s latest tragedy involving a teenager.
Josiah Madrid was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 1700 block of Marshall Avenue just after 5:35 a.m. Evansville Police and paramedics performed emergency aid, but the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives believe the shooting was not random and are actively pursuing leads. No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not released information about a possible motive or suspect.
“Josiah was a good kid with a huge heart,” said family friend Tanisha Carter, who helped organize an impromptu vigil Wednesday night. “He was funny, respectful, always checking on people. This wasn’t supposed to happen to him.”
A junior at Bosse High School, Josiah was known for his easy smile and quiet loyalty. Classmates say he loved music, could light up any room with his laugh, and was the friend who always had your back.
“He was just starting to figure out what he wanted to do after graduation,” said one close friend who asked not to be named. “He had plans. Real plans. And now he’s gone.”
Dozens gathered at the shooting scene Wednesday evening, placing candles, balloons, and stuffed animals at a growing memorial. More vigils are being planned for the weekend, with students and community leaders calling for an end to the gun violence that has claimed multiple young lives in Evansville this year.
“We keep burying our babies,” said Pastor Michael Ellis of Memorial Baptist Church. “Josiah’s story has to be the one that finally makes us say enough.”
