The community of Fairfax, Iowa, is grieving the loss of 93-year-old Russell Olson, who tragically died in a house fire early Sunday morning, October 5, 2025.
According to officials, the fire broke out at Olson’s residence on Olson Court in the early hours, prompting a swift response from multiple emergency units. Despite firefighters’ determined efforts to control the blaze and rescue those inside, Russell was unable to make it out of the home. Four others managed to escape, with two being treated for smoke inhalation at a nearby hospital.

Born and raised in Iowa, Russell was a beloved father, grandfather, and longtime community member known for his warmth, humility, and unwavering kindness. Neighbors described him as a pillar of strength — someone who always greeted others with a smile and lent a helping hand whenever needed.
“Russell was the kind of person everyone loved. He always had time for others and made Fairfax feel like family,” a neighbor shared.
His passing leaves an immense void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
