The Fayetteville community has been left heartbroken following a devastating single-vehicle crash on Rosehill Road late Wednesday night, October 8, 2025, that claimed the lives of three E.E. Smith High School students.
Among the victims was Trevor Merritt, a cherished student-athlete known for his leadership, kindness, and unwavering dedication both in the classroom and on the field. Friends and teachers describe him as someone whose positivity and determination inspired those around him.

In response to the tragedy, Cumberland County Schools announced that grief counseling and emotional support services have been made available for students, staff, and faculty as the school community struggles to come to terms with the sudden loss.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of three E.E. Smith High School students following a single motor vehicle crash that occurred yesterday. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, loved ones, and the entire E.E. Smith Golden Bulls community during this difficult time,” the district shared in an official statement.
School leaders emphasized that their priority remains providing comfort and assistance to everyone affected by this heartbreaking event.
As the community grieves, residents, classmates, and friends have begun leaving flowers, candles, and heartfelt notes near the crash site in memory of the young lives lost too soon.
Authorities have not released additional details about the crash, out of respect for the victims’ families.
