Findlay, Ohio – A tragic police-involved shooting unfolded Wednesday afternoon when officers fatally shot 90-year-old Chance Hunnicutt after he allegedly pointed a firearm at them outside his residence on Cherry Lane. The incident has prompted an active investigation by both local law enforcement and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).
According to the Findlay Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area around 3:00 p.m. following a report of possible gunfire in the neighborhood. Upon arrival, they encountered Hunnicutt, who was reportedly armed with a handgun.

Authorities said officers issued multiple commands for Hunnicutt to drop the weapon, but he allegedly raised the firearm toward them instead. In response, officers opened fire, striking him. Despite immediate medical aid from officers and paramedics, Chance Hunnicutt was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police confirmed that no one else was injured during the confrontation. While the original 911 call mentioned gunfire, investigators have not confirmed whether any shots were fired before police arrived.
The area around Cherry Lane was temporarily shut down as investigators processed the scene. Agents from the BCI are leading the independent review, examining body camera footage, interviewing witnesses, and collecting evidence to determine what led to the deadly exchange.
Neighbors described Hunnicutt as a quiet, longtime resident, expressing disbelief over the incident. “It’s shocking — you’d never expect something like this here,” one neighbor said.
Findlay Police Chief and city officials offered condolences to the family and community, assuring residents that the investigation will be handled with full transparency. Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, in line with department policy.
Counseling services are being offered to both the officers involved and affected community members. Once completed, BCI’s findings will be submitted to the Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
