The Florence community is reeling today following the death of Charles Burkley Jr., 39, a U.S. Army veteran and father who was killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 57.
Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers say the crash happened just after 5 p.m. near the intersection with Frank Cochran Loop. Burkley was driving his 2002 Ford Explorer southbound when a northbound vehicle turned left directly into his path. The impact proved fatal for Burkley; the other driver was uninjured and is cooperating with investigators. No charges have been announced at this time.

Burkley, a Technical Engineer during his Army service, was remembered by friends and family as the definition of quiet strength: a devoted father, a reliable friend who would drop everything to help, and a man whose warm smile could calm any room.
“Charles never met a stranger and never left anyone in need,” said longtime friend Marcus Tate. “If your mower wouldn’t start, your kid needed advice, or you just needed someone to listen, Charles was there, no questions asked.”
News of his death has prompted an outpouring of support. A GoFundMe organized by fellow veterans has already surpassed $75,000 in less than 24 hours to assist his children and family. The VFW Post in Florence has opened its doors around the clock for anyone wishing to share stories or grieve together.
Funeral arrangements are pending, but services with full military honors are expected early next week.Highway 57 at Frank Cochran Loop was closed for several hours following the crash. The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
