The Leesburg community is mourning the sudden loss of Todd Funkhouser, affectionately known to many as “Mr. Funk,” “Uncle T,” or “T-Funk.” Todd tragically passed away following a cardiac event while hiking along the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls, one of his favorite outdoor spots.
According to reports, bystanders quickly called for emergency assistance, but due to the challenging terrain, rescue crews were unable to reach him in time.

Funkhouser, a former physical education teacher at Horizon Elementary School, spent five years inspiring students through his energy, humor, and dedication to their well-being. Colleagues and students remember him as a teacher who brought joy and authenticity into every classroom and gym session.
“He wasn’t just a teacher — he was a role model, a friend, and a bright light for every student who crossed his path,” one former colleague shared. “He had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued.”
Todd’s impact extended far beyond the classroom. Known for his larger-than-life personality, he was admired for his loyalty, honesty, and humor. Friends describe him as the kind of person who would drop everything to help someone in need and who could turn even the hardest days into moments of laughter.
His former teaching team at Horizon Elementary fondly remembers his last day at the school on June 13, 2018, calling it a day filled with laughter and warmth. Todd referred to his colleagues as “The Dream Team,” a nickname that captured the camaraderie and connection he helped foster among staff.
Outside of work, Todd found joy and peace in nature — especially while hiking. Those close to him find comfort in knowing that he passed away doing something he deeply loved.
His family has announced that he will be cremated, and a celebration of life will be held in the coming days. Arrangements are being coordinated through Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, Virginia.
Todd’s sister, Lauren, and their mother have expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support they’ve received. In a statement, Lauren wrote:
“Our hearts go out to everyone as we share the burden of losing Todd — who was just a good human being and funny as hell. He loved being a teacher and lived for ‘his’ kids at school.”
Todd Funkhouser’s passing leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and love — one that will continue to live on in the hearts of his students, friends, and all who were lucky enough to know him.
