OMAHA, Neb. – The Nebraska football community is mourning the loss of Matt Vrzal, a former Husker offensive lineman and well-known Omaha business owner, who has died at the age of 51.

Vrzal, a Grand Island native, walked on to the Huskers in 1993 and went on to appear in more than 30 games from 1993–1996. He played a key role at both center and guard during Nebraska’s powerhouse run that secured two national championships.
Following his playing days, Vrzal became a fixture in Omaha, most notably as the owner of Piezon’s Pizzeria, a popular neighborhood spot. He was also a familiar voice to listeners of 1620 The Zone, where his humor, honesty, and love for sports made him a fan favorite.
Beyond business and broadcasting, Vrzal shared his passion for football as an assistant coach at Skutt Catholic High School, mentoring young athletes both on and off the field.
Tributes have poured in from across the state, with friends, fans, and former teammates remembering him as a devoted husband, father, coach, and community figure whose impact reached far beyond the game.
He is survived by his family and a wide circle of friends in Nebraska and beyond.
