Washington Township, OH — The community mourns the tragic loss of 44-year-old Ernesto Chavez of Fremont, who died in a single-vehicle crash on US 20 in Washington Township, Sandusky County.
Authorities reported that Chavez was traveling eastbound when his vehicle crossed the center median, leaving the roadway and striking a mailbox and a nearby barn before coming to a stop. Emergency responders pronounced him deceased at the scene.
A 10-year-old passenger, seated in the right rear of the vehicle, sustained serious injuries but is currently in stable condition at Mercy Health Saint Vincent Medical Center. Officials confirmed that both Chavez and the child were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol, with assistance from the Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, Sandusky County EMS, Lindsey Volunteer Fire Department, the Sandusky County Coroner’s Office, and local towing services, responded to the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
