Gardening Community Mourns the Passing of Theron Miller, Founder of The Humble Gnomestead
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Theron Miller, the widely admired gardener and creator of the popular online platform The Humble Gnomestead, died Tuesday morning after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 46.
Over the past eight years, Miller built a devoted following of more than 400,000 across YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook by sharing practical, science-based gardening advice delivered with a distinctive blend of East Tennessee warmth and quiet humor.

His videos—filmed almost entirely in his one-acre homestead garden—covered topics ranging from companion planting and soil health to heirloom seed saving and pollinator conservation.
What set Miller apart, viewers say, was his emphasis on accessibility and encouragement. He frequently reminded beginners that “gardening is just a long conversation with plants—and they’re very forgiving listeners.”
Miller continued posting educational content even after his diagnosis, with his final video on garlic planting uploaded three weeks ago. In recent months he focused on succession strategies, telling viewers, “Someone else will have to harvest this one for me.”
A U.S. Army veteran and former high-school biology teacher, Miller leaves behind his wife, Emily, and a global community of gardeners who credit him with inspiring their own plots, balconies, and windowsill herb gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the East Tennessee chapter of the American Cancer Society or the purchase of a packet of seeds to plant in Theron’s memory.
“His greatest hope,” Emily Miller said, “was that every person who watched him would feel confident enough to get their hands in the dirt. The garden will keep teaching his lessons for years to come.”
