
CHAPEL HILL, NC — A 74-year-old man has been taken into custody following a shooting on Franklin Street Thursday evening. Authorities say Geary Wayne Council allegedly shot a person in the foot during an altercation.
The victim was transported to UNC Hospitals and is expected to recover. Chapel Hill Police Chief Celisa Lehew confirmed that the department’s downtown unit, which patrols Franklin Street around the clock, responded quickly and apprehended Council at the scene.
Witnesses described the incident as shocking, noting that such violence is rare in the area. Police have stated that they believe the shooting was an isolated event and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The investigation remains active as authorities continue to gather information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Council faces multiple charges, including attempted murder.
