HICKORY, N.C. — A devastating motorcycle crash late Friday night has left the Hickory community mourning the loss of a young rider.

According to the Hickory Police Department, the crash occurred just after 10:20 p.m. on August 29 along U.S. Highway 70 SE. Investigators say a 2020 Kawasaki motorcycle, driven by 23-year-old Elijah Jenks of Granite Quarry, was headed westbound when it veered off the roadway and collided with two parked vehicles in the lot of Cloninger Ford of Hickory.
Despite immediate efforts from first responders, Jenks was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities believe excessive speed was a factor in the crash.
The violent impact left the motorcycle destroyed and forced a temporary closure of part of the highway as investigators worked the scene. Witnesses nearby described hearing a loud crash that echoed across the roadway.
The Hickory Police Department continues to investigate and is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward. Those with information are asked to contact Sgt. Amanda Efird at 828-328-5551.
