Authorities are investigating after gunfire erupted Thursday night at the 2025 DeKalb County Free Fall Fair, sending crowds scrambling and leaving several people injured in the resulting stampede.

The incident was reported shortly before 8:52 p.m. EDT, according to DeKalb County Police scanner traffic. Officers said they heard multiple shots and later recovered a 9mm firearm at the scene.
Police confirmed that two suspects were taken into custody near the Auburn Brewery, just outside the fairgrounds. Their identities and a possible motive have not yet been released.
Witnesses described a scene of panic as families and fairgoers ran for safety when the shots rang out. Emergency responders treated several individuals for injuries sustained while fleeing. Authorities have not yet confirmed if anyone was struck by gunfire.
Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses as part of their ongoing investigation.
The DeKalb County Free Fall Fair, one of northeast Indiana’s largest annual events, draws thousands of visitors each year.
