Hanover, VA – Authorities are investigating a tragic incident that left one man dead after a vehicle crash and apparent shooting Tuesday evening on Interstate 295 in Hanover County.

The victim has been identified as Hunter Davis, 27, of Henrico. According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), Davis was driving a 2011 white Ford F-250 southbound near Exit 38 at Pole Green Road when his vehicle suddenly left the roadway, struck an embankment, and erupted in flames around 6:30 p.m.
Investigators later confirmed that the truck had been fired upon by an unknown assailant prior to the crash, adding a deeply troubling dimension to the deadly event.
Emergency crews arrived swiftly, but despite their efforts, Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. His loss has left family, friends, and the wider community in grief, as loved ones remember a young man whose life ended far too soon.
The crash brought traffic on I-295 to a standstill for hours, with vehicles diverted at Exit 41 to Route 301 while troopers and forensic units conducted their investigation. The roadway was not reopened until 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Authorities are now treating the case as both a homicide and traffic investigation. The VSP Richmond Division is urging anyone with information to come forward, calling for witnesses or drivers who may have been in the area at the time to provide details that could help identify the shooter.
“This is a tragic and senseless act of violence,” a VSP spokesperson said, noting that the shooting and crash remain under active investigation. “We are committed to following every lead to bring answers and accountability in this case.”
The violent circumstances surrounding Davis’s death have left many in the Hanover and Henrico communities shaken, underscoring concerns about roadway violence and gun-related crimes.
