A homecoming celebration at Heidelberg High School turned tragic Friday night when gunfire erupted during the football game, claiming the lives of two people and injuring another, authorities reported.
According to Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White, officers responding to the scene found one victim on the school’s baseball field and another near the bleachers in the tailgating area. A third person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Investigators say the suspect or suspects fled the scene. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Bay Springs Police Department, and Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, are collaborating to locate those responsible.
Heidelberg Mayor Robert Barnett condemned the incident as a senseless act of violence that has left the tight-knit community shaken. “This kind of tragedy cannot continue to happen in our city. We will pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law and work to ensure Heidelberg remains a safe place for all,” Barnett said.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims or any potential suspects as the investigation continues.
