The Helena community is in mourning following the tragic loss of 47-year-old Larry James, a beloved local businessman and the owner of James Paving. Larry’s life was cut short earlier this week after he went missing on the Black Warrior River. His passing has left a profound void for his family, friends, and everyone who knew him—not only as a skilled professional but as a kind, generous man who made a lasting impact on those around him.
Larry was first reported missing on Monday when his boat was found abandoned along the riverbank south of the Lock 8 Boat Landing. Although the boat was discovered in Hale County, it was found across the water in Greene County, sparking immediate concern and fears for his safety. This discovery led to an intensive, multi-agency search effort aimed at bringing Larry home.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol Division and Aviation Unit mobilized quickly, coordinating with other law enforcement and emergency teams, including the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, Tuscaloosa County Fire and Rescue Dive Team, and several local groups. The search efforts involved both professional responders and local residents who offered their help in hopes of finding Larry alive.
Sadly, on Friday at 12:06 p.m., the search came to a sorrowful end when Larry’s body was recovered approximately three miles south of the Lock 8 boat launch. While the news brought some closure, it only deepened the grief felt throughout the community.
